Social justice: bringing a Human Touch to the issues of the day
At Solas we always seek creative ways of engaging with the social justice issues of our times. This year is no exception, as under the banner of Human Touch we explore how we can foster humanity in today's world.
This is a year of elections in many places in the world. Sir John Curtice, the renowned British political scientist, will explore with us in his unique way the prospects for the UK election.
Solas aims to be a gathering place where people can explore openly what is on their minds. We are learning what it is to agree and disagree well. Much of that happens with friends old and new over a drink or with lovely live music in the background. In our Hope and Anchor tent, there will be conversations on issues as eclectic as the spirituality of laughter or how our bodies experience trauma.
Alongside, there will be thought-provoking panel discussions delving into the pressing issues of our time. Explore humanity's impact on climate, and what the collective solutions are, as we examine the impact of human activities on the environment and potential strategies for mitigating climate change.
Dive into AI and Music with speakers including Christian McCabe, a musician, producer, and writer with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Music. McCabe has produced chart-topping hits, and his upcoming album 'Deep Fried Sunshine' showcases his innovative approach to fusing AI with creativity.
In an assisted dying session, GP Dr. Gavin Francis will chair a panel featuring Fiona McCormick (palliative care physician), Professor Ben Colburn (philosopher), and Louis Resnick (ethicist) to explore the proposed Scottish legislation on assisted dying. The discussion will delve into the ethical, legal, and emotional complexities surrounding this sensitive issue, fostering an open and respectful dialogue on a polarising topic.
At Solas, we are always very aware of the world around us. This year we are particularly mindful of Palestine and Israel, and will have a strand entitled ‘A Human Touch For the Peoples of the Middle East’. We will be taking sides: the side of humanity. We are standing in solidarity with all the peoples of that part of the world, celebrating their creativity; mourning their loss of life, freedom and peace; dreaming of how their life could be better and reflecting on what part we each can play.
As we revel in the human creativity of an arts festival, there are so many ways we can also seek to bring humanity to our world.
Solas Festival: June 14-16, 2024. Book tickets.
